Don’t stress yourself with preparing for small talk: Spend time thinking about the various activities you engage in (gardening, reading, learning new technologies) and which might be of interest to the type of people you meet.For example, if you’re introverted, pretend to be an extraverted character in a video game and score points by talking to new people! Turn it into a game: Turning something from being scary into being fun is an effective way to change behavior.Networking doesn’t have to involve meeting new people: Reach out to your dormant ties (alumni, friends from previous jobs) with the intention of simply reconnecting.But most don’t have an effective strategy for dealing with these situations. At an in-person event, look around. If there’s an odd number of people, chances are there’s someone who really isn’t a part of the conversation, and they are likely looking for a conversational partner. The reality is that awkward client conversations can be well, awkward, and as our 2022 State of client engagement report shows, just about every accountant and bookkeeper in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom experiences these on a regular basis. Look for islands: Researchers have found that people almost always interact in groups of two or dyads.Do you feel awkward making small talk when meeting new people? Do you hate the feeling of walking into a large conference hall and seeing a sea of strangers? Whether you are attending events in the real world or confined to the virtual realm, networking doesn’t have to be scary or hard.
